On Improving Your Handwriting and Penmanship Skills

31 January 2010

Although it might appear like penmanship is becoming redundant, it’s a skill that is still today crucial in many walks of life. A written letter communicates more importance than a typed letter; for example an application for a job, an invitation or an apology.

One may believe it’s a recent trend of people shunning hand writing for the keyboard, yet way back to the late 1800s, there were complaints that hand writing was disregarded because of the typewriter. Nowadays, the blame is being linked to the ubiquitous utilisation of computers.

Yet, there still exists a strong requirement for penmanship skills in in all walks of life. Hand-written missives are viewed as far more honest, they show the author has studied over his words, while evincing more respect to the reader. During this era of templated letters, the penned missive has never been more potent.

I have a confession to make. I’ve oftentimes been caught out with my terrible penmanship - made worse by years of relying on my computer keyboard. In situations in which I’ve had to put pen to paper, my writing’s been almost indecipherable at times. What did I do? I handwrote as often as I could, and my handwriting greatly improved. Therefore it’s best to polish your hand-writing by practise.

One more tip is to find a pen you are comfy with, and it must accept refills. Good refills include the legendary Mont Blanc Pens range. This enables you to improve your penmanship with a single pen.
