Web Fans Celebrate Coming John Carter of Mars Movie

25 October 2009

In 1912 an unknown writer who was a failed businessman sat down to earn some money by penning a story about a soldier who dies in an Arizona cave only to be resurrected on a strange, alien world. There he meets tall four-armed green men, a beautiful red woman, and his destiny. Published in four parts, A Princess of Mars told the story of John Carter of Mars, one of the all-time greatest pulp fiction heroes.

Edgar Rice Burroughs gained immortality by writing about exciting heroes like John Carter of Mars, Carson Napier of Venus, and Tarzan. Although Tarzan became Burroughs’ most popular character, John Carter of Mars is often credited by many science fiction writers as being one of their first literary heroes.

Now after many years of failed attempts to bring a John Carter of Mars movie to completion, the Disney and Pixar studios have committed to delivering a live-action “John Carter of Mars” film to theaters by 2012, marking the 100th anniversary of the publication of A Princess of Mars. Although purists worry that radical changes may be made to Burroughs’ imaginary Mars, many fans are looking forward to the movie’s release by creating John Carter of Mars Web sites and blogs.

Some of the most well-informed discussion takes place in John Carter of Mars movie threads on science fiction forums. The interest in the movie is so intense some people have even launched multiple John Carter of Mars Web sites just to be sure they reach as many readers as possible.
